The Orchard Ethos

At Orchard School and Nursery, we believe the earliest years shape a child’s future. From Seedlings to Prep 4, every child is known, valued and inspired to grow in confidence and independence. For over 35 years, we have been building strong foundations for happy, successful futures. This is The Orchard Way: Nurture, Curiosity and Resilience.

The Orchard Way: Nurture, Curiosity and Resilience

At Orchard School and Nursery, we believe that a child’s earliest experiences shape their future. Our mission is to provide a continuous, nurturing journey from birth to age nine, built on a foundation of care, curiosity and high expectations. For over 30 years, we have worked in partnership with families to give children the strongest possible start in life.
Every child is unique. At Orchard, we tailor learning to individual strengths, interests and needs, ensuring that each child feels known, valued and inspired. The high standards of education we provide are designed not only to build knowledge and skills, but also to foster confidence, independence and a lifelong love of learning.
We encourage every pupil to participate fully in Orchard life. From academic lessons and creative arts to outdoor adventures and community events, children are given rich opportunities to explore, discover and grow. Participating in and learning through experience are central to character development, as they prepare children for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
At the same time, we provide clear boundaries and consistent guidance. Through kindness, encouragement and thoughtful teaching, pupils develop self-discipline, respect for others and the ability to make positive choices. We believe that well-being and character are as important as academic progress, and we are proud to see our pupils leave Orchard as confident and compassionate learners who are well-prepared for the next stage of their journey.

Values

At Orchard, our values—Nurture, Curiosity, and Resilience—shape everything we do, from Seedlings to Prep 4. These values are not just abstract concepts; they underpin our ethos and are present in both the smallest daily moments and the wider opportunities provided to pupils.

Curiosity

Curiosity begins in Seedlings, as babies delight in exploring textures, sounds and movement. In Blossoms, Codlings and Pippins, it is seen in toddlers asking questions, experimenting through play and learning by doing. In Russets, curiosity is fostered through stories, imaginative play and first investigations. As pupils progress through Prep R to Prep 4, it is encouraged in every subject, from problem-solving in maths to scientific enquiry, creative expression in the arts, and a love of reading. By nurturing curiosity at every stage, we inspire children to develop inquisitive minds and a deep love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

Nurture

In Seedlings and Blossoms, nurture means gentle care, secure routines and strong attachments that help our youngest children feel safe and settled. In Codlings and Pippins, it is the encouragement and support that allows toddlers to grow in confidence as they explore their world. By the time children move into Russets, nurture is seen in the reassurance that helps them develop independence, friendships and readiness for school. In Prep R to Prep 4, nurture comes through trusted relationships, high expectations and guidance that enable pupils to flourish socially, emotionally and academically.

Resilience

Resilience is first seen in Seedlings when babies begin to persevere as they master new skills. In Blossoms, Codlings and Pippins, it is the determination to keep trying even when things do not go as planned. In Russets, resilience grows as children learn to try again after mistakes and celebrate their progress. From Prep R to Prep 4, resilience shines through in the courage to perform in front of others, the determination to complete challenging work, and the confidence to participate in sports, games, and friendly competitions. At Orchard, we help children see mistakes as opportunities, take pride in effort as much as achievement, and develop the confidence and strength of character that prepares them for life beyond Orchard.

At Orchard, our ethos is grounded in our values and lived every day in classrooms, playgrounds, and the wider community. Staff and pupils alike embody The Orchard Way—Nurture, Curiosity, and Resilience—so our culture reflects these values and enables children to flourish and families to feel proud and secure.
